We are currently building bicycles in Brooklyn and are moving to Oakland this winter to start a business there. We need a name to brand the bikes and our shop. The idea for the shop is customized bicycles, where you get to choose your wheels, handlebars, brake levers, etc, etc.
We were thinking Brooklyn Bike Builders but are hesitant to move to the West Cost and call our business a Brooklyn name. We really want to get the point across that the bikes are highly customizable and affordable, and can be used by anybody, so we were also thinking Everybody Cycles.
We were also thinking of other names but just can’t come up with something that gets the point across and also sounds good. Some ideas were:
Bespoke Cycles (already taken!!)

Personally, I like Brooklyn Bike Builders or simply Brooklyn Bike more than anything else here. You’re branding a name…it stands out better than these, imo. Not sure we need to be so literal and worry about how people think of the name – they don’t care in the same way, they just want to find a parking space or whatever, so make it sticky. Further, it’s honest, it tells a story (you’re here from Brooklyn (good), you have history + experience, etc. in hand already) and finally…Oakland is the new Brooklyn, no?
Best luck to you (if I throw out a new suggestion later, it’s not to discount these points…even should they rock 🙂

Well, I agree that Brooklyn Bicycles works better in Oakland than Oakland Bicycles would, and it has a nice alliteration. So it’s not terrible. But it’s still generic and doesn’t set you apart from other bike shops. Your positioning seems to be in the Power To The People vein (…highly customizable and affordable, and can be used by anybody…), so I’d explore that.. Definitely avoid all the “hub,” “spoke” and “ride” names that are done to death in your space, though I quite like van helsing’s tagline, Different Spokes for Different Folks.
Revolution Bicycles (prob not available, but unites Power To The People with the spinning wheel)
CustomCraft — Different Spokes for Different Folks
RideOn! (I know, broke my own “rule”)
Rolling Thunder (again!)
Brooklynite (like an element, like Kryptonite)
One By One
Another tagline: To each his own.
