Advanced Search

There are 3 ways to search for material on Wordlab:

1   STANDARD STRING SEARCH

Display Wordlab entries with the following string:

2   BEGINNING STRING SEARCH

Display Wordlab entries beginning with:

3   SITE SEARCH

Enter a word or phrase in quotation marks:

Try clicking each of the "Search" buttons above with their default settings to see how each one works. Then replace the default settings with your own search strings and discover the true power of the WordLab database. Below is more information on each of the three search methods.

1. Standard String Search: This is the standard search box always located in the left frame. Type in any string of two or more letters and get all entries to the WordLab database that contain those letters in that order somewhere within the entry. If you find too few results returned, try reducing the length of the string you wish to search to the root of each concept word you are looking for; i.e. try searching for "run" instead of "running".

2. Beginning String Search: The Display button below will return all entries that begin with the string of letters you enter in the box next to it. You could find all such entries together in the alphabetized Big List, but this is a short-cut and a filter for just the letters or word you want.

3. Site Search: Use this search engine to search the entire Wordlab site for a word or phrase. This is especially helpful if you are looking for something that may have already appeared on the Wordboard or elswhere in the past. You can search for a word or for multiple words - just be sure that if it's an exact phrase you wish to search that you put the phrase in quotation marks. For example, if you enter the following in the Site Search box above - Name for upscale apartment community - the Site Search will return results for each of the five words individually. If, however, you enter "Name for upscale apartment community" with quotation marks, you will get a search result for the entire phrase, not the individual words.
