A couple friends and I have gotten together to start one of the first real microbreweries in Seoul, South Korea. The name should be English and doesn’t necessarily need to relate to Korean culture. We are super excited to bring a locally made craft beer to Korea, but we are stumbling with the name.
Initially we wanted to have a location-based name but where we are located just doesn’t have the appeal that someplace like Kona Brewery or Brooklyn Brewery does. This neighborhood has unpleasant connotations, so that’s out.
Right now we are considering:
Magpie Brewery
The magpie is good luck in Korea as well as being known as a bird that doesn’t migrate but rather makes a permanent home on the roof of a Korean house, rather like us expats
Brotherhood Brewery
Korean people refer to others as brother and sister even when not related. It also evokes that we are doing this with the help of our Korean friends and customers, in a spirit of brotherhood.
Back Alley Brewery
Our first retail location is in a back alley. We’d build a handmade, warm brand around this, even tho it has some squalid connotations as well. But one competitor import here is Alley Kat.
Thunder Honey Brewery
We just like the sound of this, but not sure if it goes beyond that at all. Honey and beer are both highly desirable, handmade, and have similar hue, but that’s about it.
Full Jars Brewery
