Company Names

Public Group active 7 hours, 37 minutes ago

The name of your company should make a sudden impact, be memorable, and create buzz. If not, prepare to be eaten alive by the other companies that know how to brand themselves.

Post requests for company names as new topics in the Forum for this group.

    Hi guys,

I have been reading lots and lots about naming brands, companies etc before posting on here but i need a second opinion and some suggestions if anyone is game.
I always feel a bit sheepish making my first post on a forum a request for something but here goes.

As a sideline to my day job I am part of a large car club, due to me being an engineer i have ended up solving some problems, producing the solutions for people & selling them. Being such a small trade i hadn’t set up any form of trader name and just sold under my forum name of “Husky”. Now the “business” is growing, I have just secured a deal to be the UK distributer of a brand of premium alloy wheels. (As you can tell so far this has all kind of happened by accident…) Anyway, to secure a proper trader space on my local forum and other forums i do need to trade under a name.

So off the top of my head here are some notes to try and work from:

-This is somethign relaxed and friendly so something where people know there is customer service behind the name would be great.

-I dont want the name brand dependant, hence i haven’t mentioned it to save getting anyone stuck with it in their head ;)

-It covers all manner of modification & upgrade parts.

-Something a bit “different” would only be expected from me and would be welcomed straight away i feel.

-most products are design based rather than performance.

    -clean design

    -stylish

-better than / upgrade from stock components

    -modern

    current idea i’m toying with:

    Canis Lupus
-For: Different, relates to current name, interesting, stylish
-Against: may be difficult to remember, doesnt condense well for logos & the shortening to CL doesnt have a ring to it, googling Lupus finds a disease :O

    Rummaging the bin ideas such as;

    Rabid Wombat Design
-for: acronym is RWD suggesting rear wheel drive and hence sports cars which is relevant, is non specific, wombat is a harmless creature
-against: im not australian nor is the bussness, why is it rabid?

actually come to think of it i dont remember the other ones, needless to say they were all cr….ummy.

If you need anything else just let me know, i could ramble on for hours, its been on my mind for a month and a half now!

    Cheers,

    John

    Bezoar

Not a disease, but a mass found trapped in the gastrointestinal system ;)
Bezoars were sought because they were believed to have the power of a universal antidote against any poison.

    Is ‘Husky’ not an option?

It’s simple, it has strong connotations and you are already using it.

  • Profile picture of Husky Husky2p said 1 year, 8 months ago ago:

hmm husky isn’t so much of an option i feel as it would have to be followed up by “design” or some such to make it work.

I think this is one of the hardest things ive ever done haha

nothings catching my eye yet, time for some asprin.

    doggy style

haha dont know if thats serious enough? or does that matter?

  • Profile picture of chris chris302p said 1 year, 8 months ago ago:

That it isn’t ‘serious’ is not a problem…but that is not the answer.

The answer is that it depends entirely on your audience; if they would find it funny, engaging and appropriate then go for it..if they would smile but then think it was a bit offensive/trivial/unprofessional, then don’t. If they would point blank hate it then doubly don’t.
You know your audience and I don’t. You have to call this one.

It also depends if it is something you can live with…and not just now but in 2, 3, 5 years time….

I concur with Chris — personally, I don’t think such a name would do your product justice.

  • Profile picture of Husky Husky2p said 1 year, 8 months ago ago:

no i agree, it doesn’t suit.
I have to think about my suppliers also, will they will look at the name in a business capacity rather than a customer one? Is there a difference?

I’m trying to not think as hard about this before my head explodes. It’ll come to me eventually i suppose.

Just thought i’d pop in and say the name finally settled on. It came to light (pun intended) yesterday when talking to a friend.

    Akari Design

Akari means light in Japanese and seeing as most of the work i do is light orientated and on Japanese cars it seemed apt. also it doesn’t prevent me from using it on other applications as the meaning is not widely known unless people google it.

    Thanks guys :)

pros: has an A at the start, has a hard consonant in the name (i’m told thats good for impact?), is short, is relevant.
cons: spelling may be difficult to remember, may be confused with ascari, the .com web domain is not available (although others are, if i went with designS plural i could have the .com)
