Hitachi, Sony and Toshiba are merging their LCD businesses to become Japan Displays Ltd. (BORRRRRING). However, there will be a subsidiary division of the company–headquartered in the US, but marketing globally–that makes custom LCD display assemblies for manufacturers of all sorts of electronic devices. They will make the LCD displays for everything from smart phones and medical imaging devices to cash registers and electronic gambling machines (and just about anything else that has an LCD screen or readout).
US Managers expressed their desire to have a company name that is less generic than “Japan Displays” and actually says something about their product line, capabilities and/or corporate philosophy. In short they want a name that HELPS them in their marketing rather than hinders them.
This division offers both pre-engineered, off-the shelf LCD display assemblies as well as custom engineered solutions. Their displays are are the clearest/sharpest in the industry and are more technologically advanced than competitive displays. They pride themselves on their ability to bring value to manufacturing partnerships. They know that they succeed only when their customers (those bringing the product to market) succeed.
My ad agency has been asked to ante up recommendations for possible names for the commercial LCD division. We are exploring names that communicate the following concepts:
Clarity/Brightness/Fidelity
Flexibility/Versatility
Advanced Technology/Technological Superiority
Synergy–i.e., component assemblies become an important part of the whole
“Can Do” attitude
The new company name should play well globally. Existing words or made up words are both viable. Must avoid names that have negative connotations in other languages. We’re just starting on this and would love to have some input from the WORDLAB community.
