Company Names

Public Group active 7 hours, 2 minutes ago

The name of your company should make a sudden impact, be memorable, and create buzz. If not, prepare to be eaten alive by the other companies that know how to brand themselves.

Post requests for company names as new topics in the Forum for this group.

Business specializes in holistic, natural and grain free pet foods. Local delivery is free. I’d like to NOT use words that other independent pet food stores in my area use: wholesome, hound, pampered, 4 legged, 4 paws. Is there anything else I need to tell you about the business or the market? ~ Chris

What’s the advantage in being grain free? Ands what do you mean by ‘holistic’ in this context?

  • Profile picture of Xena Xena12p said 1 year, 11 months ago ago:

Most companies use very low quality grains as fillers in pet food. Even the best grains are not what cats and dogs as carnivores thrive on. Grain storage problems yielded the 2005 pet food recall of Diamond Pet Foods when aflatoxin poisoning killed so many dogs. Aflatoxin is a mold that can plague grain bins.

The food I admire most is called Orijen from Canada and is made up of fresh deboned chicken, chicken meal, turkey meal, russet potato, fresh deboned pacific salmon (a natural source of DHA and EPA), herring meal, sweet potato, peas, fresh deboned lake whitefish, fresh deboned northern walleye, chicken fat.

No corn, no wheat which commonly cause allergies in dogs.

Holistic is pretty much a catch term used in this market. … along with ‘natural’. What I mean by holistic is health for the whole pet while doing no harm with artificial chemicals and cheap ingredients.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I have several pets. I thought about incorporating their name in the company name.
    Greta
    Tip (aka Tipper, Tippy, TippyCanoe)
    Felix
Xena (I think too easy to misspell)
    Angel
    Princess

    Rational argument:
Why? What will YOUR pets names mean to your audience?

    Emotional argument:
What will the pets you DON’T incorporate into the name be thinking? How will they feel when they’re left out?

    …either way, don’t do it

(and there is a cat food called Felix already)

Haha! Can one child be more special than the other? I’m grasping. Ok, I am going to put this one out there.

    Against The Grain Pet Nutrition

  • Profile picture of chris chris302p said 1 year, 11 months ago ago:

My only concern is that ‘Against the grain’ is a negative; it encapsulates what you are against and not what you are for. By and large, positives work better than negatives.

I would welcome snark’s take on this; I could be wrong.

I like “Against the Grain”. @chris is right in the sense of negative constructions (not negative meanings) usually being bad, such as Not Stupid, Not a Bad Diet, Nothing Bad In This Food, etc. But “Against the Grain” is not merely a negative construction meaning “we’re against grain in pet food” — yes it is that, but it is also a well known idiom, meaning to go against perceived wisdom or common practice (against the status quo), which is very much @xena‘s philosophy and attitude. I like this name for its balance of specific (product level) and metaphorical (philosophical, attitudinal) interpretations.

Yeah! Thanks guys! Now if anything else pops up please chime in.

The name just feels right. I have been writing my business plan and wrote how Against The Grain is a company that does things differently. That’s my lead sentence. I don’t focus on the grain aspect because not all grain is bad. I focus on how we are different.

My hestitation like Chris said was it starts of with a negative but in this case I think it will help me stand out and give me an opportunity to explain better pet nutrition to new folks.

I have zero experience in these things comparing to snark and chris, and equally in pet food processing… but what if “some kind” of Grain comes on the market and proves not to be bad… or it is taken out of the formula by all pet food companies? Just a thought.

Another option for negative form: “Never Grain”

PS. I am still struggling to name my own company.
