Company Names

Public Group active 8 minutes ago

The name of your company should make a sudden impact, be memorable, and create buzz. If not, prepare to be eaten alive by the other companies that know how to brand themselves.

Post requests for company names as new topics in the Forum for this group.

I’m starting a company to sell supplies to garage biologists and biohackers, amateur and professional.

SO: we need a name that is both appealing to the amateur community and professional scientists. A name like “cheapo-bio.com” or “amateurbio.com” might turn the pros off.

Ideally, we’ll find a name that is hip and slightly edgy, something at conveys a little bit of street cred, but not enough to freak anyone out. Mash-up the Shepard Fairey OBEY brand (hip) + Science McGuyver (DIYish) + Dr. Horrible’s Sing Along Blog (sciency fun) + Astronauts (awesome) and that’s sort of the brand identity I want.

    Got any ideas?

My favorite name so far is “HandyScientist.com” or HandySci.

    Here are some other ideas:
    peepbio.com
    molynaut.com
    bringbio.com
    qb.io
    mbio.com
    mb.io
    recbio.com
    holobio.com
    hollabio.com
    fuabc.com (fucking awesome bio company)
    makerbio.com
    diybiostore.com
    folkbio.com
    freelicase.com
    freelix.com
    shinybio.com
    synb.org

    For context, try googling “diybio”.

We’ll have two sorts of products:

    1. Existing hardware & reagents that we sell in smaller quantities or at lower prices than traditional lab supply companies. These products can all be purchased somewhere else, but often at much greater hassle or expense – for instance, an amateur might have to form a business to convince certain traditional supply companies to sell to them (cough, invitrogen, bio-rad, etc)

    2. New hardware tools and kits that garage biologists are inventing on their own, often because the existing solutions are way too expensive, closed-source, boring, etc.

It’s the second category of products that I’m really excited about. Some of the amateur inventions we’ll sell will be so good that professional scientists will actually want to buy them.
