Company Names

Public Group active 3 hours, 35 minutes ago

The name of your company should make a sudden impact, be memorable, and create buzz. If not, prepare to be eaten alive by the other companies that know how to brand themselves.

Post requests for company names as new topics in the Forum for this group.

OK here goes: I am starting an high-frequency automated trading firm.

It trades only its own capital, so it would be classified as a “proprietary” trading firm, meaning we don’t take outside investment nor do we sell our intellectual property or services to third parties.

The trading is fully automated, meaning no human decision making is involved once the algorithms are running on the servers. This is known as black-box trading. The time scales are very short. Microseconds will count on speed of placing/canceling orders. Positions are held for very short periods of time: on the order of seconds to minutes at the most. High performance computing and specialized software is required along with low latency network connections to the exchanges and data feeds.

We add liquidity to the markets we trade in, and risk our own capital, thus helping make the markets run more efficiently and conventional investors get better pricing.

The trading will eventually be in many different asset classes including equities, bonds, futures, options, and foreign exchange – initially in US markets but expanding into certain foreign markets as well.

The founders are ex-physicists, electrical engineers, computer science geeks, and communications theory researchers. Typically researchers in the financial industry who apply sophisticated mathematical analysis to trading are called quantitative analysts, or “quants” for short.

I know this is a free web site, but if I get a great company name that I end up using, I am willing to pay for it. You tell me what is appropriate.

We will potentially compete against the big, evil mega-banks/brokers and hope to relieve them of their obscene profits – so there is a Robin Hood element to this.

Here are some examples of successful and/or respected quantitative trading firms (or companies that have departments in that business)

    Banks/Brokers:
    Goldman Sachs
    Morgan Stanley
    Barclays
    Deutsche Bank
    JP Morgan

    Hedge Funds:
    Athena Capital Research
    D.E. Shaw
    Renaissance
    Citadel
    Tower Research
    Knight

    Proprietary:
    Hudson River Trading
    Wolverine Trading
    Optiver
    CTC (Chicago Trading Company)
    GETCO
    Ronin Capital

We are trying to convey that we are: world-class scientists, engineers, and programmers building very intelligent (almost sentient) systems to make statistically significant predictions about the future direction of prices in every imaginable electronically traded security.

Here is what we have come up with so far. Any feedback on existing names is welcome also. Many of them attempt to be a play on Quant (also trying to allude to Quantum Physics, from which some of our mathetmatical concepts are drawn)

Once can add one of the following words to the end of any of these:

    Networks / Research / Laboratories /
    Advisors / Capital / Trading / Securities

    Quantum Automata
    Quantum Box *
    Quantum Computing

Well @quark & @uberquant et al, you can always start by telling The Story of The Great Recession through punny quant taglines…

    An offer you quant refuse
    You quant do that
    Quant you hear me knocking
Quant take my eyes off you
You can look but you quant touch
    Quant help falling in love
    The girl quant help it
Quant get a word in edgewise
    Quant hold your liquor
Betcha quant do it like me
I quant give you anything but love
    Quant buy me love
    You quant hurry love
    Quant fight this feeling
    I quant help it
    Quant hold back
    Quant get enough
If you quant beat em, join em
    You quant miss it
    Wild hearts quant be broken
Quant hold a candle to it
    Quant hold us down
You quant see beyond the end of your nose
    You quant resist
Quant see the forest for the trees
    You quant touch this
    Quant slow down
    Quant stop the music
    You quant scare me
Quant get it out of my head
    Quant wait another minute
    I quant blame you
    I quant get no satisfaction
    I quant stand losing you
    You quant do that
    I quant watch this
    Quant shake the feeling
A leopard quant change its spots
    I quant hold back
    We quant be stopped
    I quant stand it
Quant we all just get along
    Why quant we be friends
You can run but you quant hide
    Quant find my way home
    You quant bring us down
    This quant be happening
    I quant explain
You quant always get what you want
    You quant unring a bell
    You quant win ‘em all
    You quant catch me
    Quant get it back

    You quant be serious?

    Beggars quant be choosers

@chris – there is a $1B+ fund already in the industry – The Sentient Group

@uberquant – naming the company here, so not as creative as naming the black-box product (for which I might suggest names like: Mantra, Flashbox, Factor Flash, or Slush Box, etc.)

For the firm’s name, how about something like…

    Darwin Analytics

My quant cant rant, above, inspired this blog post: Great Recession stages of grief in songs of “can’t”. It’s like tapping your toe to the funeral music….

Ok, I have a name. Maybe not your name, but a name none the less.

    Nearium

    …or else -
    Nearium Analytics
    Nearium Trade(ing)
    Nearium Financial
    Nearium Patrners
    Nearium Quant
    Nearium Fry,
    Neariumium, ad infinitum

…not too much, but a little like a pharma name; could be quickly branded away from that tho and I see nothing in that space or the financial space, nor any spacely commercial place whatsoever. Without going very deep in Google, there is at least a reference to a plant secretion, which may have a relationship to the Oleander plant (not sure).

…a basic trademark search is negative for Nearium. It was not registered as a .com or .org, so I just registered these now. Thus, in the quantfried case you end up using the name, as you suggested above, we’ll have no trouble working out an amicable transfer. In the event you go with one of the freebies I can’t get out of my head right now and will post later, then you can take those for free and give to the greedy ;)

    How about Quantanamo ? Haha
    Quantanamo Bay Securites

  • Profile picture of snark snark813p said 4 years, 3 months ago ago:

I love it, @uberquant. Not Quantanamo Bay, which is too obvious — just,

    Quantanamo

Like “Quant/quantum dynamo”. And it’s funny, which you probably don’t get a lot of in your industry.

  • Profile picture of quark quark224p said 4 years, 3 months ago ago:

    Quantanamo…

Great if you guys are never selling anything to the public or even institutions (in other words, just for insiders name). But no good otherwise, imo.

The reason is you are in financial services. I think getting a little outrageous w the name is not a bad idea, in and of itself, but this association is too negative for your market. If Guantanimo did not reference human torture, you’d have an excellent, pre-branded play on words (like snark’s Quotezart for a music-based quote system). Something more outrageous could certainly work, but human torture, child abuse, disease, etc. are too offensive for your market.

Now ask @snark for an outrageous name that isn’t associated with human suffering and you’ll get some action ;)

  • Profile picture of quark quark224p said 4 years, 3 months ago ago:

Even SickBid is not too outrageous, perhaps. It’s a play on sick-bed, but somehow not as offensive as human torture.

    SickBid
    Sick Gains
    Hit the Bid

(more later, have to get outside just now)
