WORDBOARD POLICY CHANGES !

Posted by:

Snark

Snark here, the Kurtz of this little Heart of Darkness. Me and Quark, the founders, after prodding by Abnu and others, have decided to reign-in the runaway train of this bulletin board and bring it back to its intended focus: naming, branding and related advertising and marketing issues. How will we be doing that? By ruthlessly deleting posts that veer too far from the target.

What this means: it means, bluntly, that the days of laissez-faire run-amokery are over. You people wanted free will and we gave it to you (sorry, I couldn't resist), and some have hurled the dreaded C-word ("Censorship!") at us in the past when we've deleted offensive posts, and we're tried to be accommodating. Well, those days are gone.

We will now be deleting any posts we want in order to re-focus this board. My sincerest apologies to all of you whose posts will be cut, and to those of you who have just discovered this site by following a link from a search engine to a thread that is now gone; flaming, dating issues, guy problems, girl problems, acne, anal sex how-to questions, school election slogans, etc will no longer be a part of this site. I recommend you move your discussions of these important topics to a chat room of your choosing, as Wordlab will no longer be able to fulfill that need for you.

Exceptions: the best part of rules are that they create a climate for exceptions to breed in. If you are creative, if you post with wit and intelligence, you can get your post past our Neanderthal censors to thrive in the brilliant sunlight of Wordlab's new dawn. How you do that will be your challenge to figure out, I can't tell you.

Oh, and please use an appropriate Subject line when you create a thread, otherwise you risk having the thread deleted, perhaps by accident during this feeding frenzy, if we perceive that it's not relevant.

Good luck to all. Happy Holidays and a prosperous New Year, but most especially Peace for all people everywhere.

Now, let the slashing begin.

Snark

Steve illustrated the problem perfectly, though, if he had really wanted to be authentic, he would have included a bunch of mispelings and oterh gramatikal erorrs.

Any wiseass who wants to make themselves a perfect example of the problem can be made also a perfect example of the solution.

Wordlab records the IP address of every computer from which posts are made to these threads, and flagrant violators simply will be barred permanently from participating.

Good point, Abnu. Also, in response to the person who just posted a thread suggesting that off-topic threads can avoid deletion merely by putting "company names" in the subject, a thread by the way that I immediately deleted, I have this response: don't bother, it won't work.

We see all the posts as they come in, subject AND message body. We can delete anything anytime, so really, you're just wasting your time. A better use of your time would be to find a new site where you can post and chat to your heart's content.

I would just like to say that these really stink, in my opinion. could you PLEASE think of some other way?

i have good reasoning:

first, alot of people come here to share their problems and get advice(including me). I do think that it is bad that there are bad words and stuff, but wordlab was the one place i had to rely on. i dont like other chat rooms because you can never focus on one subject in those. here, a lot of my problems have been solved by people like me.

maybe you could do something like, uh, delete all the ones that have cus words and stuff like that, but keep the others. really, i have no where else to go.

I understand that you are doing this to keep bad things out. I agree! 100%! I think that some people get way out of hand on this site. but if you could just delete those innapropriate ones, this could become the great place that everyone wants it to be.

please consider.

happy holidays!

To Snark & Quark,
THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!
I love contributing to this site, but finding the time is a real problem at certain times of the year(like now) and I hated wasting time wading through all the detritus!
Keep up the Good Work!
Cheers & All the Best Wishes of the Season to everyone!

I sympathize with your plight, itstrue678, but if you read the note in red you'll see that this policy change has nothing to do with cuss words. It is simply that we want to focus this board on the topic of this site -- words, language, naming, branding, etc.

For better or worse, Wordlab was never designed to be a teen chat room. Moreover, we've been around for over 5 years now, and the teen chat explosion only began within the past year, and only because certain threads requesting high school election slogans show up very high on Google search results for those phrases. After that, the focus of this site changed dramatically, and all we're doing now is taking control and moving it back to where we intended it to be.

I'm sure you can find site somewhere that better suits your needs, and, of course, you're always free to create your own and set any policy you wish.

Good luck,
Snark

Dear itstrue 678,

We know there are places on the Internet better suited to discussions of interest to you - where you can share problems and get advice and meet nice people with similar interests.

We understand that you like the thread style of discussion board that is used here at Wordlab. We agree with you that "chat rooms" don't provide the forums or the community that should make your discussions rewarding and fun.

But there are hundreds of discussion boards and communities on the Internet. And, there's probably more than one, somewhere, that you'd find even better suited for your interests than Wordlab.

You sound like a nice person, so we've taken a few minutes to search out some places where you might look for discussion groups that are full of people hoping to get into such discussions.

You probably want to find an online community that is "age appropriate" or that has a good reputation for family friendly discussions.

Every online community has its own set of rules or guidelines for acceptable behavior and relevant discussion topics. You will have more fun if you find a community that discusses your interests, shares your values and rewards you for playing nice by the rules of the group.

You might want to check out online communities with a very broad range of topics, where you can create your own user ID and join in discussions or start your own threads like you have done here. That's really what you like about Wordlab.

Here's a partial list of online communities you might like to check out:

http://www.cellar.org

http://www.teenspot.com/boards/

http://teen.iris-studios.com/

http://www.teen-moods.net/forums/

Or, you can pick something else from this longer list:

http://www.vbulletin.com/links.php

Or, you can go to www.about.com and do a search for "discussion boards" and you will find thousands listed on a variety of special interest topics that might really catch your attention.

Good luck and enjoy the Internet.

I appluad the disappearance of the over abundance of said threads... as a long time labber I believe it is unfortunate to have reached that stage. But, even I was getting tired of wading through the hundreds of 'Chattles' repetitive hyperbole dispensation.

Thanks guys! Happy New Year!

Obscurity isn't so bad. We can only do what we can do and it doesn't include the subjects in red above (although Nosila is the master of the universe when it comes to election slogans). I wouldn't mind if it were otherwise, if I had been popular in high school, if I had been popular today, if my bones weren't getting salty and if my checkbook weren't less like Arod's.

Good luck above the radar flapjacks.

Well, maybe I picked a really good time to prodigal my fat ass back to the Promised Lab!

Thanks Q, S, & A for finally purging the distraction element. That's why I stopped coming...I mean, I hated high school plenty without having it rearing its bouncin' an' behavin' head right here in my own home away from home away from van down by the river.

Good job. And a much better policy than the one I previously found so flame-worthy.

Does this mean no more Turkish news? How are we going to get our Turkish news? It's hard to get news from Turkey out here, what with all the beaver activity and all.

I can only pull in about four or five web sites -- yours is one, it must have a powerful antenna. I can get a few others but they come in pretty fuzzy.

Also, what about Lotta and Kikki?

Well, the county wouldn't let me post on the internet for a while... I also had to pay fifty dollars and replant all the grass out on highway 51. You probably saw about the incident in the paper, I was the one on the right.

Also, I had to relocate to be at least twenty miles from any fire hydrants or radiators... anyway, out here the beavers take down the phone poles pretty regular... plays hell with my internet reception. Like I said, I can only get a few sites real clear... I can't pick up anything from Constantinople. Also, the muskrats; they are always getting into the pens and carrying off the sheep. It sucks, really.

I don't know how the New Classic Country Songs got killed. Perhaps I did it in my slash-and-burn haste, or maybe Quark was having an Alan Jackson hangover. Whatever. But it seems innocent enough -- I mean, I don't think it will hurt anybody. And since I still have email receipts of those entries, I will re-create this thread. Why? Because I love you all so much. But mainly, for Willie.

You're telling me, Tipple. After years of just ignoring this board I helped give birth to because it was just filling up with crap, I now kill posts and threads with gleeful abandon. I recommend everybody start a board like this so they can discover the PURE JOY of censorship.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have an Execution to attend to down in the dungeon...
