Controversial Thoroughbred Name Remains at Bay

Racehorse owner Garrett Redmond's 2-year-old filly is out of Jefferson's Secret, whose sire was Colonial Affair. Redmond thinks the name Sally Hemings would be a natural for a horse of such lineage.

The Jockey Club and the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority disagreed, saying that since Hemings is a famous or notorious person, such names require special approval and "names considered in poor taste; or names that may be offensive to religious, political or ethnic groups'' won't be approved.

Sally Hemings was a colonial era slave, reputed to be a mistress of Thomas Jefferson. A federal judge has recently dismissed the lawsuit, but Redmond says public opinion is on his side and he will appeal.
